Vehicle familiarization

  1. Seat adjustment, up/down – back/forth
  2. Seat belt adjustment (correct alignment and tension)
  3. Mirror adjustment, rear view and outside

Equipment operation / inspection / adjustment

  • Steering wheel / horn / air bag / cruse controls
  • Steering column / ignition / gear shift selector / turn signals / windshield wipers, lights (high-low beams) / steering wheel adjustment(s)
  • Instrument cluster / speedometer / gauges / warning lights
  • Dash board (left to right) blower vents / headlight on-off switch / emergency flashers, heater / defroster / air conditioner / blower motor (fan) / radio
  • Emergency brake / foot pedals, foot placement and techniques

Enter traffic using SMOG (Signal, Mirror, Observe over the shoulder, Go) procedure
Drive in lower traffic areas executing:
Right & left hand turns using SMOG procedure and proper lane alignment
Lane changes using SMOG procedure
Correct stopping position / distance at

  • Intersections (controlled and uncontrolled)
  • Crosswalks (marked and unmarked)
  • Behind stopped traffic
  • Railroad crossings

Identify and observe correct following distance
Shared center turn lane maneuvers
Identify signage and execute correct action / procedure
Utilize SIPDE procedure during all types of driving
* Determine appropriate place/time to introduce push-pull steering technique*

Parking procedures executed in a parking lot (limited to reduced traffic area)

  • Execute multiple on street curb park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure
  • Execute multiple up hill curb park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure
  • Execute multiple up hill “no” curb park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure
  • Execute multiple down hill curb park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure
  • Execute multiple 90 degree reverse park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure
  • Execute multiple parallel park & return to traffic using SMOG procedure in parking lot

Review and discuss areas of concern needing practice prior to next session.
